      2011 Hall of Fame Inductees

ALBERT C. MANUCY
Considered the authoritative scholar on St. Augustine history and architecture, Albert Manucy was a St. Augustine native and Ketterlinus High School graduate of 1928.  After earning his Master’s degree from the University of Florida in 1934, Mr. Manucy began working for the National Park Service exploring in detail the Castillo de San Marcos. Mr. Manucy was among the writers chosen by the Federal Writer’s Project to contribute to Florida’s travel literature publication celebrating Florida’s culture and history. As a Fulbright scholar, he studied Spanish architecture. In 1966 he became curator for the Southeast Regional Office of the Park Service. Mr. Manucy received the Amigos de los Castillos silver medal from the government of Spain, awards from the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation and the Eastern National Park and Monument Association, granted the Order of La Florida by the city of St. Augustine  and  recognized by the state as a Great Floridian. His books on architecture and history include The Houses of St. Augustine, 1566-1821, Sixteenth Century St. Augustine: The People and Their Homes, and Artillery Through the Ages and many other publications. 

HERBERT L. WILES
Herbie Wiles attended Ketterlinus High School and served in the Navy during World War II. After graduating Florida State University in 1952 with a BA in business, he joined his father as a State Farm insurance agent.  In 1961 he founded Herbie Wiles Insurance and, though currently “retired,” he still maintains an office there today.  His commitment to his native city is reflected in his record of public service.  Mr. Wiles was president of the St. Augustine/St. Johns County Chamber of Commerce in 1965, served three terms on the St. Johns County Board of Commissioners, president of the St. Augustine Historical Society, on the board of trustees at Flagler Hospital and its advisory board, was president of the St. Augustine Kiwanis Club, Betty Griffin House, the Presidents council of Flagler College and treasurer of the Memorial Presbyterian Church.  Mr. Wiles served as the first chairman of the Northeast Florida Regional Planning Council. His contributions to local civic matters have been recognized by a lifetime service award for longstanding commitment to and concern for good government and for service to fellow citizens.

CAROL A. MELTON
Carol Melton graduated St. Augustine High School in 1972. She earned a B.A. degree from Wake Forest University, and M.A. in Journalism and Communications from the University of Florida and J.D. with honors from the Washington College of Law at American University. For more than two decades, Ms. Melton has worked at top levels in media and entertainment.  Currently, Ms. Melton serves in senior management at Time Warner Inc., overseeing Time Warner’s public policy offices in Washington, D.C., London, Brussels and Hong Kong.  Named to Washingtonian magazine’s “100 Most Powerful Women in Washington” in 2006 and 2009, Ms. Melton has also received the NCTA Vanguard Award for Government Relations.  She is a Trustee of the Committee for Economic Development and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Federal City Council. She previously served on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Broadcasters and on the Boards of Trustees of the Media Institute, the Meridian International Center, the Potomac School, the Federal Communications Bar Association Foundation and the Washington Performing Arts Society.

Verle A. Pope - SAHS Class of 1924

The “Lion of St. Johns,” Mr. Pope served in the Florida Senate for 24 years and as Senate president from 1966 to 1968. He was known for using his skills as a great orator as a rallying point for major governmental reform in Florida.  A successful St. Augustine businessman, Senator Pope is remembered for his strength of convictions, contributions to public service and his acts of charity.





W. Douglas Hartley - KHS Class of 1936

For 28 years, Mr. Hartley was superintendent of the St. Johns County School system and the embodiment of excellence in education. His contributions as an educational leader and mentor were recognized through the many accommodations and honors he received. He is fondly remembered as our most loyal Yellow Jacket supporter.






Richard O.Watson - KHS Class of 1951

Appointed in 1977 as the resident Circuit Judge for St. Johns County, Mr. Watson served as Chief Judge of the Seventh Judicial Circuit, Administrative Judge of St. Johns County and currently as a Senior Circuit Judge on assignment by the Florida Supreme Court. In respect for his judicial career and appreciation of his standards of excellence, the Richard O. Watson Judicial Center was dedicated in his honor in 2008.





Leonard O. Pellicer - SAHS Class of 1963

Dr. Pellicer was the co-developer and Director of the African American Professors Program at the University of South Carolina and an acclaimed author in the field of educational leadership. As a Fulbright Scholar in South Asia, he developed training programs for school leaders in the region. His publications have become best sellers in the field of education and can be found in libraries and book stores around the world.




Stephanie J. Young - SAHS Class of 1967

Ms. Young began her career in law enforcement as a policewomen with the Cocoa Beach Police Department in 1970. She served with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement as a special agent supervisor. She was the first female to graduate from the FBI National Academy for Law Enforcement Administrators. She graduated from law school in 1991 and worked as a civil and criminal defense attorney and as a corporate lawyer.






Ronald L. Bailey - SAHS Class of 1973

Major General Ronald Bailey is the first African-American to lead a Marine Regimental combat team into combat and the first African-American to hold the post of director of the Expeditionary Warfare School. He is currently serving as the commanding general, Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego and commanding general, Western Recruiting Region in San Diego. He has earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology and a Masters Degree in Business Management and Administration.
